Classical Ballet

What is Classical Ballet?

Combining aesthetics with technique, classical ballet is a highly formalised dance style that dates back to the 15th century. Classical ballet is widely loved, practiced and watched, and is known globally for its unqiue vocabulary based on French terminology.

Classical ballet is a precise art form which originated in the 15th century during the Italian Renaissancee and has been made popular by ballets such as La Sylphide in 1832 and Giselle in 1841, and more recently by the modern ballet evolution through styles such as contemporary ballet and neoclassical ballet. Today, ballet is celebrated globally for its elegant and ethereal qualities as well as its diversity and ability to express different emotions through movement.

Ballet has evolved over the decades and subsequent subgenres have emerged. Such subgenres include Russian ballet, French ballet, Italian ballet and Romantic ballet. Beyond these subgenres, internationally there are six technical methods used to teach ballet. These include the Vaganova method, the Bournonville method, the Royal Academy of Dance method, the Balanchine method, the French method and the Cecchetti method.

At Danzart Studio, our highly trained teachers follow the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) method in our classical ballet classes. The RAD technique focuses on building a strong technical foundation, developed through the slower paced syllabus which centres on perfecting foundational steps.
